Expect fewer beach days and more conversation: guided walks through Stone Town’s old town and its former slave-trade sites, time with local farmers at a spice farm, a visit to a rural village, and a forest walk led by community rangers who know Jozani’s red colobus monkeys personally.
The trip closes on Zanzibar’s quieter southern coast, away from the busier northern resorts, for a last look at a more traditional side of island life.
Arrive at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) and transfer to your hotel in Stone Town. In the afternoon, join a guided heritage walk through the UNESCO World Heritage old town, including the House of Wonders, the Old Fort and the Anglican Cathedral built on the site of the former slave market. Overnight in Stone Town.
Take a boat to Prison Island (Changuu), originally built to hold rebellious slaves and later used as a quarantine station, to learn its history and meet its resident giant Aldabra tortoises. Visit a working spice farm to learn how cloves, vanilla and cinnamon shaped Zanzibar’s colonial history, then continue to a nearby village for an authentic look at rural island life, guided by a local community member. Overnight in Stone Town.
Walk through Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park with a community ranger in search of the rare red colobus monkey, then visit the neighbouring Pete village’s mangrove boardwalk, built and run by the local community. Overnight in Stone Town or transfer south.
Head to the quieter southern coast around Kizimkazi and Makunduchi, where traditional fishing villages and coastal life continue much as they have for generations. Join a local cultural activity arranged with your guide, such as a Swahili cooking demonstration. Overnight in southern Zanzibar.
