Built for first-time visitors, this 5-day, 4-night tour is a carefully paced introduction to everything that makes Zanzibar special: the history and spice markets of Stone Town, a boat trip to Prison Island and the Nakupenda Sandbank, a working spice farm and Jozani Forest, and two full days on the island’s best beaches at Nungwi and Kendwa.
Nothing is rushed and nothing important is left out — this is the itinerary we recommend most often to guests visiting Zanzibar for the first time. Airport transfers, accommodation and an English-speaking guide are included throughout.

This itinerary hits every essential Zanzibar experience without overloading the schedule: a morning learning the island’s history in Stone Town, an afternoon on the water around Prison Island, a spice farm tasting walk and a stop in Jozani Forest to find the rare red colobus monkey, then two unhurried days on the white-sand beaches of Nungwi and Kendwa.
It’s the itinerary we’d choose ourselves for a first visit — enough culture and history to understand the island, and enough beach time to actually relax.
Arrive at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ), where our driver-guide will meet you for a transfer to your hotel in Stone Town. In the afternoon, join a guided walking tour of the UNESCO World Heritage old town — the House of Wonders, the Old Fort, the Anglican Cathedral built on the site of the former slave market, and the narrow alleyways lined with carved Zanzibari doors. Overnight in Stone Town.
Take a short boat ride to Prison Island (Changuu) to meet its resident giant Aldabra tortoises, then continue to the Nakupenda Sandbank for swimming, snorkelling and a freshly grilled seafood lunch on the sand. Return to Stone Town in the late afternoon with time to explore Forodhani Gardens as the food stalls open for the evening. Overnight in Stone Town.
Visit a working spice farm to taste and smell the cloves, vanilla and cinnamon that once made Zanzibar the world’s largest clove exporter, then continue to Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park in search of the rare red colobus monkey found nowhere else on earth. In the afternoon, continue to Paje on the east coast for a relaxed evening on the beach. Overnight in Paje.
Travel north to Nungwi, known for some of the whitest sand and clearest water in Zanzibar. For those who want to get in the water, we can arrange an optional snorkelling excursion to Mnemba Atoll, one of the best snorkel sites in East Africa. Spend the afternoon relaxing on Nungwi or neighbouring Kendwa beach and enjoy a sunset drink at one of the beach bars. Overnight in Nungwi.
Enjoy a final relaxed morning on Nungwi’s white sand — a swim, a walk along the beach, or simply one last coffee with an ocean view. In the afternoon, transfer back to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport for your departure flight, bringing your 5-day introduction to Zanzibar to a close.
