What to Expect

Zanzibar is famous for far more than its beaches, and this itinerary is built to show you why. In Stone Town you’ll wander a UNESCO World Heritage maze of coral-stone alleyways, carved doors and bustling markets, then head out on the water to Prison Island and the ever-shifting Nakupenda sandbank for swimming and fresh seafood. A stop at a working spice farm reveals how cloves, vanilla and cinnamon shaped the island’s history, while a walk through Jozani Forest brings you face to face with the rare red colobus monkey, found nowhere else on earth.

From there it’s north to Nungwi and Kendwa, where powder-white beaches meet some of the clearest water in the Indian Ocean — perfect for sunset dhow cruises and optional snorkelling trips out to Mnemba Island. The final days unwind in Paje on the east coast, a laid-back kite-surfing village where the Blue Lagoon and endless stretches of sand are the whole point.

  • Stone Town's UNESCO Old Town & spice markets
  • Prison Island giant tortoises & swimming
  • Nakupenda Sandbank boat trip & seafood lunch
  • Jozani Forest's rare red colobus monkeys
  • Nungwi & Kendwa's white-sand beaches
  • Paje's Blue Lagoon & optional Mnemba Island snorkeling
Itinerary

Day 1Arrive in Stone Town

Arrive at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ), where our driver-guide will meet you for a private transfer to your hotel in Stone Town. Spend the afternoon settling in, then join us in the evening for a welcome dinner at Forodhani Gardens, sampling Zanzibari street food along the historic waterfront. Overnight in Stone Town.

Day 2Stone Town Heritage Walk & Spice Farm

This morning, explore Stone Town’s UNESCO World Heritage old town on foot: the House of Wonders, the Old Fort, the Anglican Cathedral built on the site of the former slave market, and the narrow alleyways lined with carved Zanzibari doors. In the afternoon, visit a working spice farm outside town to see, smell and taste the cloves, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg that once made Zanzibar the world’s largest clove exporter. Overnight in Stone Town.

Day 3Prison Island & Nakupenda Sandbank

Take a short boat ride to Prison Island (Changuu) to meet its resident population of giant Aldabra tortoises, some over 100 years old, then continue by boat to the Nakupenda sandbank — a strip of pure white sand that appears and disappears with the tide. Swim, snorkel and enjoy a freshly grilled seafood lunch on the sand before returning to Stone Town. Overnight in Stone Town.

Day 4Transfer to Nungwi via Jozani Forest

Check out of your Stone Town hotel and head north, stopping en route at Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park, home to the rare Zanzibar red colobus monkey found nowhere else on earth. Continue to Nungwi on the island’s northern tip, known for some of the whitest sand and clearest water in Zanzibar. Check in to your beachfront hotel and spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing by the ocean. Overnight in Nungwi (2 nights).

Day 5Nungwi & Mnemba Island

A free day to enjoy Nungwi and neighbouring Kendwa beach, with time to relax by the pool or on the sand. For those who want to get in the water, we can arrange an optional snorkelling excursion to Mnemba Atoll, one of the best snorkel and dive sites in East Africa, home to vibrant coral reefs and the chance to swim alongside dolphins. Watch the sunset from one of Nungwi’s beach bars in the evening. Overnight in Nungwi.

Day 6Transfer to Paje

Travel across the island to Paje on the east coast, famous for its huge tidal flats, kite-surfing scene and laid-back beach bars. Check in to your hotel and spend the afternoon at leisure — walk the beach at low tide, try a kite-surfing lesson, or simply relax by the Indian Ocean. Overnight in Paje.

Day 7Blue Lagoon & Departure

Spend your final morning at Paje’s Blue Lagoon, a shallow, calm swimming spot perfect for a last dip, or take an optional excursion to nearby Kuza Cave for a freshwater swim. In the afternoon, transfer back to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport for your onward flight, bringing your 7-day Zanzibar experience to a close.
