Zanzibar – Stone Town Heritage Walking Tour

0
  • 3.5 Hours
  • Max Guests : 12
  • Licensed Local Guide
  • Available Daily, Year-Round

Detail

Zanzibar’s Stone Town is a living UNESCO World Heritage Site – a maze of coral-stone alleys, carved wooden doors and centuries of Swahili, Arab, Persian, Indian and European history layered into one square mile by the sea. This half-day walk is led by a licensed local guide who grew up in the old town, so you get the stories behind the buildings, not just the names.

We keep the group small and the pace easy, with plenty of shade breaks, a spice-tea stop, and time to browse the market stalls. It’s the best first introduction to Zanzibar for anyone arriving in Stone Town, and pairs well with any of our beach or spice-farm excursions later in your stay.

Price Includes

  • Licensed local guide (English-speaking)
  • Bottled water & spice-tea tasting
  • Hotel pickup & drop-off (Stone Town area)
  • Small-group walking tour (max 12 people)

Price Excludes

  • Entrance fees (House of Wonders / Old Fort, if visited)
  • Personal souvenirs & gratuities
  • Bottled water & meals beyond the spice-tea stop

What to Expect

Your guide will point out the details most visitors walk straight past – the carved Zanzibari doors that once signalled a family’s wealth and trade, the balconies of the old Arab merchant houses, and the everyday life still happening in the alleys around them.

  • Forodhani Gardens & the waterfront
  • The Old Fort (Ngome Kongwe)
  • The House of Wonders (Beit al-Ajaib) exterior
  • Carved Zanzibari doors & the old slave market site

Itinerary

9:00 AM – Forodhani Gardens (Meeting Point)

We meet your guide at Forodhani Gardens, the palm-lined waterfront park facing the old harbour. A short briefing, then we head into the maze of alleys behind the seafront.

10:00 AM – The Old Fort & House of Wonders

We walk to the Old Fort (Ngome Kongwe), the oldest surviving building in Stone Town, then pass the House of Wonders – once the tallest building in East Africa and the first in Zanzibar to have electricity and a lift.

11:00 AM – Spice Market & Old Slave Market Site

We wander through Darajani Market and the narrow lanes of the old town, passing the site of the former slave market (now home to the Anglican Cathedral) and stopping to point out the carved wooden doors that give Stone Town its name.

12:00 PM – Spice Tea Stop & Market Alleys

Time to slow down: a stop for spiced Zanzibari tea and a taste of local snacks, plus free time to browse the market stalls for spices, textiles and souvenirs.

1:00 PM – Tour Ends Near Darajani Market

We finish back near Darajani Market with time for last photos, and your guide can point you toward a good spot for lunch or help you plan your next few days in Zanzibar. Hotel drop-off is available on request.

FAQ

Can I get a refund if I cancel?

Yes – cancellations made at least 48 hours before the tour start time receive a full refund. Cancellations inside 48 hours, or no-shows, are non-refundable, since your guide is booked specifically for your group.

Can I change the travel date?

Yes, subject to availability – this walking tour runs daily, so just message us on WhatsApp or email and we’ll move you to a different date at no extra charge (48 hours’ notice is appreciated).

My discount code is not working, what do I do?

Double-check the code is entered exactly as shown (codes are case-sensitive) and that the promotion hasn’t expired. Still stuck? Contact us with a screenshot and we’ll sort it out or apply the discount manually.

Do I need a visa for Zanzibar?

Most nationalities need a Tanzania tourist visa to visit Zanzibar. You can apply for an eVisa in advance at visa.immigration.go.tz, or get a visa on arrival at the airport – fees vary by nationality, so check the official portal for your country. Zanzibar also requires a separate, mandatory local travel insurance policy (from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation, purchased online or on arrival) – this is required even if you already have international travel insurance.

Is travel insurance required?

Zanzibar requires all visitors to hold a local Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC) policy, purchased online in advance or on arrival – currently around $44 for adults and $22 for children (3–17), covering emergency medical care and evacuation for up to 92 days. This is required even if you already have your own international travel insurance, and it’s separate from the tour price shown above.
